Orange Protein Bites
These orange creamsicle protein bites are the perfect pre-workout or post-workout snack. These bite size pieces make a delicious snack for kids.
I always have protein balls or energy bites available for snacking. The short ingredient list makes these low carb and high protein, and a perfect option to refuel after a workout or as a snack between meals.
These bites are relatively inexpensive to make and use ingredients that are likely in your pantry already.
Chocolate orange balls recipe
Another reason that I love these orange energy balls is that I can easily change the flavor. I used vanilla protein powder when I made these. But, you can use chocolate protein powder instead for chocolate orange balls.
For another layer of flavor and texture, add a few mini chocolate chips, dried fruit, or shredded coconut to the recipe. To give them a nutritional boost, add ground flaxseed or chia seeds.
Can I use another type of juice?
These orange creamsicle protein bites are made with concentrated frozen orange juice. This recipe can be made with any flavor of frozen concentrated juice. Pineapple, lemonade, grape, or apple would be great flavor options.
I love to use fruit concentrates for bolder flavor - this protein rich pineapple chia pudding uses pineapple which is so bright and vibrant!
What can I roll orange energy balls in?
If you want to step these up a notch, roll them in finely chopped nuts. If you are hoping for a nut-free energy ball, you can roll them in cocoa powder or a tiny bit of vegan granulated sugar. Or, if you really want to go all out and turn them into a dessert, you can drizzle them with dark chocolate.
It's so easy to change up the flavor combinations in this recipe. Just experiment until you find the perfect flavor for your family.
Nut-free orange energy balls
Since nuts are an issue for many people, you can make nut-free orange energy balls with a few simple substitutions. Instead of the cashew butter, use sunflower seed butter. Instead of using almond flour, use oat flour. These two simple substitutions will make them nut-free.
How to store energy balls
Make a large batch of these orange energy balls and store them in a tightly covered container. In the refrigerator, they will be fresh and flavorful for up to a week.
To freeze for later, lay the bites in a single layer on a cookie sheet to freeze. After they are frozen, remove them from the cookie sheet and place them in a freezer bag. Freezing them flat first helps prevent them from sticking together.

I adore the flavor and the concept, but simply love that it only takes 4 ingredients! Brilliant Kristina.
Kristina Sloggett says
thanks Alisa! we are loving these... I will need to always have the orange concentrate on hand, I think...
Nicole Dawson says
I appreciate having the nut-free option.. have you made it by chance?
Kristina Sloggett says
yep! I used my own oats ground into flour, and the creamy style WOW BUTTER - it is the same consistency so no measure changes needed. I have not yet tried with my sunflower seed butter, which is sometimes A TAD BIT runnier? you may need a tablespoon or so less, or one + tablespoon more 'flour'... I hope you like these! 🙂
Nicole Dawson says
Thanks! I'll try it out with SunButter and let you know.

This is such a fun recipe! I loved creamsicles when I was little, and I haven't had one in forever. I miss that creamy orange flavor. I'm looking forward to trying these!

I find orange juice concentrate to be a great flavor enhancer for lots of recipes -- in cakes and cookies, pancakes etc. Never tried them in protein balls, but I can see that they'd work well. Great idea!
