Old School Vegan Wiener Wraps
The only thing I really liked on the grade school lunch menu was the wiener wraps – hot dogs wrapped in puffy, fluffy dough. Pigs in a blanket, hogs in sleeping bags according to Paula, or as listed on the Byrom Elementary lunch schedule, wiener wraps.
They didn’t show up on the menu enough, in my little grade schooler opinion. Every so often they would have cheese wraps, replacing the hot dog with a string cheese. Those were even more rare, and all the more coveted.
I combined the two, for a gooey cheesy trip back in time. These are the best of summer and back to school all in one. Summer comfort food for those crisp cool evenings. Dipped in sweet tomato ketchup and tangy-spicy yellow mustard, these cover all the classic flavors.
…and just look at that melty cheese.
I used my new favorite cheese and these awesome frankfurters, wrapping them in a fluffy pastry dough. They are completely vegan, but since I never declare it they could slip under many a radar. Because they taste really dang good.
I also made a fry sauce.
I learned from Matt Armendariz during his recent Paula Deen show appearance that fry sauce is also known as salsa golf. <– a fun and interesting read.

- 6 vegan frankfurters
- 6 ounces dairy free cheese
- 1 package crescent dough
- Slice 6 pieces of cheese, unwrap franks.
- Gently stretch or roll dough, divide into six strips. Place a frank and cheese slice down middle, fold over ends first, then fold over each long side and crimp closed.
- Place on prepared (parchment or silpat) baking sheet, repeat with remaining franks, cheese and dough.
- Bake at 325° for 15-17 minutes, until dough is golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from oven and allow a few minutes cooling time (that cheese, while awesome, is molten lava!). Serve with ketchup, mustard, fry sauce.
