Why you'll love this avocado smoothie
With the consistency of a thick milkshake, this bright green avocado drink has a light sweetness that is remarkably refreshing.
This avocado shake takes minutes to make and is a three ingredient, whole food recipe. See our long list of variations to customize this avocado shake with your favorite flavors, or use less liquid and enjoy as an avocado pudding.
How to choose avocados
- Ripe avocados are often darker in their green peel
- Gently squeeze - ripe avocados will have some give
- Can you easily remove the stem? The avocado should be light green inside.
See this mango habanero guacamole for tips to ripen avocados.
Avocado smoothie variations
Over the years, I have added so many tasty ingredients to my avocado smoothies. My current favorite is adding cold, fully cooked sweet potato. Here are some variations to choose from:
- Reduce the liquid to make a super tasty avocado pudding
- Use ripe banana as sweetener in place of dates
- Add coffee to the Es Pokat avocado drink to make a delicious Es Alpukat
- Add chocolate to the drink or drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring
- Use coconut water in place of milk for an ultra hydrating avocado drink
- Juice and zest of 1 fresh lemon adds bright flavor and vitamin c
- Naturally sweeten with more fruit, like pineapple or mango for a tropical flavor
- Add cooked sweet potato for beneficial nutrients and fiber
- Increase the protein content with fresh spinach
- Add chia for additional protein and fiber (28 grams or 2 ½ tablespoons chia = 10 grams fiber)
- Add frozen cauliflower for a thicker, more nutrient dense avocado shake

Yummy, Kristina! That does look fantastic. I love avocado in many different ways. I've enjoyed it in chocolate pudding, smoothies, and salad dressings, but lately I've been loving it in a chickpea salad recipe from a friend. 🙂
Shirley
spabettie says
thanks, Shirley! this tastes similar to avocado puddings I have made in the past... but drinkable! have you posted about this chickpea salad - it sounds delicious!
Shirley @ gfe says
Kristina--Drinkable chocolate pudding ... who wouldn't like that? Might be my breakfast this morning! The chickpea salad comes from Mary of Gluten-Free Spinner. I am in love with that recipe. You can see photos here in my adoption post of her and follow the link to her recipe: http://glutenfreeeasily.com/mary-gluten-free-spinner/ Enjoy!

This looks awesome. Now I have to try it.
My favorite way to eat avocado is in chocolate pudding. Yum.
spabettie says
this is similar to the chocolate puddings I have made... YUM!
Zoe says
Wow, this looks like chocolate pudding! Hard to believe there are avocados in there. Yes, please do share the recipe 🙂
spabettie says
it's VERY tasty, similar to an avocado chocolate pudding... unfortunately I cannot share the recipe, this is part of my recipe testing I am doing for a friend's cookbook. 🙂
Kath (My Funny Little Life) says
Never heard of this!! Would you specify it a little more (read: provide a recipe) - please??? 😉
spabettie says
Kath, sorry!! perhaps I shouldn't be posting these... as part of testing recipes for my friend's book, I am not at liberty to share...
Kath (My Funny Little Life) says
Oh, don't mind! I totally understand that you can't tell if you arent authorized to share the recipe. 🙂 (I was just wondering what's in there ... avocado sounds like slightly greem but it looks so reddish, so there must be something else ... myseterious! :D)
Another thing I wondered about and you might tell ... How do you do it that I always get an email if you answer a comment I make? I'd love to install that with my blog as well! (You know, I answer all my comments, and sometimes I even write something meaningful. ;))
Have a happy Sunday! Going to work on Basil now. 🙂
spabettie says
anything like that I will always share! I have a "comment reply notification" plugin - things like this are one of the main reasons I went to self-hosting (from wordpress.com to .org...) a few months ago - you have the flexibility to add these things where you do not with a "free" blog. especially the comment reply - I love the conversation too, and I knew people weren't getting my replies unless they come to check (sometimes if I had time or if it were a real + meaningful reply I'd email to them too...).
the fact that you are "working on Basil" ? makes me SO giddy happy! <3
Lexi says
That looks delicious. I love eating my avacado anyway, especially in a salad with a little italian dressing.
spabettie says
oooh, that sounds great - with Italian dressing, maybe some sprouts... 🙂
Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty says
I love avocado anyway anyone wants to give it to me!! 🙂 I LOVE it with a little agave salt and pepper (weird yes, but so good!)
spabettie says
hmm... you are so creative! it does sound weird, but I have learned weird is often GOOD! 😉 I will try anything once!!
Joslyn @ missfitbliss says
I'm the total opposite of Heather - I LOVE avocados. So much that I actually get a bit upset when I let them get over-ripe and have to just use them as a face mask or toss them:(
spabettie says
I know... I hate that too... the other day I bought one that was not ripe... a couple days later it was too mushy 🙁
Heather (Where's the Beach) says
I am probably one of the very few vegetarians who hates avocados. It's the texture mostly,
spabettie says
I can understand the texture thing... Jason isn't a fan either, and he has texture issues with a few different foods...
Jess@HealthyExposures says
This gig sounds so awesome :] Slightly jealous! The drink looks really good! I can't say I'm a huge fan of avocado, but I've found I like it when it's disguised in a smoothie/pudding/something that doesn't make it taste like avo :PI suppose that's sort of pointless...but it gives a nice texture!
spabettie says
yes - it adds another level of creamy! and a way to get your healthy fats too... and YES, I've been having fun with the testing - so many FLAVORFUL amazing recipes!!
Midlife Cruiser says
I'm now on to you.....I think the food you photograph is plastic. It is wrong to pass this off as real food. NO REAL FOOD can look as good as what I see in your pics. You better come clean to your faithful readers. Now, if you'd like to send me a little care package so I can verify the authenticity of your food (namely the desserts), I would happily accept the job.
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
LMAO - I totally agree Kristina your food looks too good to be real 🙂 🙂 🙂
spabettie says
haa! 😉 I'll take that as a compliment, I think??
spabettie says
hee hee... yes, something like this would only work in a care package if it WAS plastic... but I would LOVE to send you a care package!! if there's a way one could follow you around and get to you, let me know, my friend!! until then... you'll never know how REAL they are... 😉
