cashew cabbage crunch salad

So.

It is Meatless Monday again, and I didn’t create anything. I have still been incredibly busy, and this last week? I’ve also had the flu. I rarely get sick, but this one has really knocked me out. I cannot even speak.

Besides my cravings for french fries (I always get that craving when sick), I have been juicing a lot. Juicing with healing ingredients like ginger. and lemon. and cayenne. and garlic.

For Meatless Monday Garlic Week, I have a recipe collection for you, including two garlic juices.

fresh veggies

Last Wednesday I shared how I stay healthy under stress, some of which could really be applied to every day – the simple steps toward a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of mine:

Eat real food. as unprocessed as possible, as natural as possible, and as colorful as possible – veggies and fruits in abundance! Stick to healthy fats, lean proteins, natural sugars.

Exercise! Cardio workouts, even as little as 20-30 minutes a day, have a big impact on health and wellness. Add weight lifting to that cardio for additional benefits, like increased metabolism. Another very important aspect of exercise – not overdoing it. when your body needs rest, listen to it. if you have an injury, follow docs orders for “working through” it or keeping off of it. Fuel your body properly for exercise.

Recognizing and managing stress, setting aside time for yourself is critical.

Sleeping for the number of hours your body requires. Lack of adequate sleep … just makes me tired thinking about it!

Drink a lot of water – while working with naturopaths, I often hear them say “drink half of your body weight in ounces per day” and I try to do this. I always have a water bottle with me, and sometimes enhance it with flavor: fresh mint, lemon wedges, apple cider vinegar, cucumber slices, ginger.

What are some of your tips for a healthy lifestyle?

apple cider vinegar lemon

I had a different post on deck for today’s Wellness Wednesday, but am sitting here writing this one in real time because… that’s how I’m rolling today.

It has been another extremely stressful and emotional week, for sure. I am exhausted, and really, nothing has even happened yet. After a short night of sleep and a busy day yesterday, all I wanted to do was go to sleep at 4:pm. I had a dinner date with two girlfriends, then class to go to later.

I rallied, I picked myself up, had an extra shot of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and aminos, and was out the door!

Sitting with the girls was not only a therapeutic and much needed break, we laughed and smiled and talked and talked and talked. We enjoyed fresh juice and wonderful raw food for dinner, and I was thankful to be there.

Right now for me, Wellness means staying healthy while under extra stress. That means making sure I am taking my supplements (I have that vitamin post coming soon!), increasing things like zinc and vitamin c and more of my favorite remedy, vibrant fresh juice and veggies.

Wellness also means choosing a few more hours in a day, when you get to spend those hours with the rich company of friends. I came home and relaxed to unwind and catch up with Jason (I call him my soother), and went to sleep early. I slept in until 5:30 today, and I honestly do feel refreshed.

…spending some down time with these two? Very therapeutic.

How do you stay healthy during stress?

To me, wellness encompasses much more than nutrition, fitness and self-care. If I have learned one important thing in this life, it is that attitude is everything. Well, it’s a lot.

When my dear Uncle Dudley was diagnosed with cancer years ago, his immediate and awesome reaction was “well, we’re gonna beat this $#!*. and he did, for quite a long time. Watching my own dad joke and smile his way through horrifically intense chemo and radiation has both melted and strengthened my heart and resolve.

Having to endure and care for a negative person while simultaneously caring for Dad? Almost did me in.

Staggering stress – dropping this person off at the [click to continue…]

radish tart and salad of living watercress

I shared yesterday that I am taking the Master Veg program and I could not be more excited about it – I have already learned so much, and the curriculum ahead of me looks great. This is another instance where I find myself in a classroom surrounded by like minded people, which is always invigorating and fun. The evening classes have an informal social hour beforehand, and a couple classmates volunteer to bring food for everyone to share – you know I am excitedly planning my turn, right?

Taking care of my Dad this last year has me focusing on my own health. I have always been a proponent of preventative maintenance rather than fixing the illness after it happens – taking care of myself now so things don’t happen later. For me, this includes a plant based diet, regular visits with my doctors, rejuvenating workouts, therapeutic massage and my own home spa treatments. Jason and I both take supplements, we always have, and in the last month have a whole new regimen we are trying (I will soon dedicate a whole post to what we are doing).

I have a new approach to food as well – using food as healing and as fuel in addition to being celebratory and a big part of entertaining. I will continue with creating a fun food experience (always), at the same time focusing even more on the healthiest and nutritionally beneficial ingredients.

Today is National Vitamin Day - have you taken your vitamins? What are some ways you practice wellness?
