Gruyere cheese. My favorite…

Cheese and apples? A perfect combination.

Check out this HUGE grape!

Grapes are another favorite of mine. Do you ever freeze them?

Grapes remind me of summertime at Grandpa and Grandma Z’s house…

Grapes in fondue. This was a new combination to me, and it is good.

spabettie fondue

1/2 pound Gruyere
1/2 pound Emmentaler
1 tablespoon flour (Bob’s Red Mill gluten free)
1 1/2 cups dry white wine

Finely grate cheeses. Coat shredded cheese with flour. Bring wine to a boil. Constantly stirring, slowly add cheese. Continue stirring until cheese is melted to make a fondue.

Dippers, or fondue vehicles

sliced apples, grapes, carrots, broccoli, bread cubes.

Jason found an amazing rosemary potato bread.

My favorite? The broccoli and the grapes.

Do you like fondue?

Which team – cheese or chocolate?

I don’t think I can pick a team! They are both completely different!! I think apples are sooo good in cheese fondue and I love all kinds of fruit in chocolate too!

2 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:07 am

yep, I’m on both teams. I’m thinking I need to follow up with a chocolate fondue post…

3 Heather (Where's the Beach) October 13, 2010 at 4:34 am

How fun – I’ve never frozen grapes. I keep hearing how great they are though. I think I’d have to be team cheese 😉

I’m definitely team chocolate, but–shockingly–I’ve never had fondue! At least not that I can remember.

6 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:05 am

oh, this definitely needs to be remedied, STAT.

(do they say stat on Grey’s??) 😀

7 Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty October 13, 2010 at 5:23 am

*sniffle* oh how I love fondue…. gotta figure out a no cheese one!!! :)

I LOVE frozen grapes!!

8 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:05 am

oh, sorry girl. I wonder if it’d be good with … vegan cheese? hmm…

9 couchpotatoathlete October 13, 2010 at 5:32 am

I am definitely team chocolate. My Mother in Law has fondue night on Christmas Eve every year — it is so much fun :)

10 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:04 am

what a great idea – something fun to look forward to! maybe I’ll start Fondue New Years Eve… !

11 Amy @ Second City Randomness October 13, 2010 at 5:42 am

Just got a craving for broccoli and cheeeeeesssseeeee…. mmmm

I heart fondue. I haven’t had it often, but there’s really nothing bad you can say about a pot of melted cheese.

12 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:03 am

exactly ! we don’t have it often either, but I’ve been thinking about it for a month or so… it was time.

13 lisasfoods October 13, 2010 at 5:53 am

I love fondue, and have had it a few times – once with a family from Quebec, and another time at that Melting Pot restaurant.

As someone with a big sweet tooth, I’d choose chocolate over cheese, but that grape and cheese combination sounds delicious.

14 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:02 am

I was thinking of things to dip… grapes sounded PERFECT and they were! YUM !

15 Brittney October 13, 2010 at 5:54 am

I love any kind of fondue! Horrifying story- the only thing my husband knows how to cook is a fondue consisting of Velveeta (oh the horror!), cream cheese, and Ice House Beer. He says it HAS to be Ice House or it doesn’t taste right. I let him make it for me every once in a while then I scrape my arteries clean after 😉

16 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:01 am

ha… Ice House or it doesn’t taste right… LOVE IT.

my friend added a Coors Light to fondue once… it isn’t too bad…

17 EmbraceYourSkin October 13, 2010 at 6:12 am

Oh my gosh, I loooove fondue!
I am a chocolate fondue girl all the way!

18 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:00 am

I need to attempt a chocolate one next… :)

19 thehungryscholar October 13, 2010 at 6:13 am

Ahhhhh I’ve missed your blog.

FONDUE! I’ve never tried it and here is a recipe. You rock.

There is a fondue restaurant not too far from here but it is super expensive!

20 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 11:00 am

I’ve missed YOU ! you rock also, my friend.

I am a huge Fondue fan!! I Love Cheese Fondue for dinner and Chocolate for dessert! I am a fan of both equally :-) Our fav place to go have Fondue is Urban Fondue in The Pearl Dist. Awesome place. Amazingly delicious. Sadly, I have never made it at home. Yours looks amazing. I might have to attempt this.

22 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:59 am

it’s really easy!

I need to try the Urban Fondue place… we used to go to the Melting Pot on the West Side, haven’t been to the newer one.

23 tropicaleats October 13, 2010 at 6:44 am

mmm love frozen grapes! im more of a cheese and bread fan when it comes to dinner fondue, but then definitely need to have the chocolate for dessert afterwards :)

24 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:58 am

I’ve usually eaten too much cheese to have the chocolate, but that is my ideal as well… :)

25 Lynn October 13, 2010 at 7:23 am

I havent had fondue since I was a child! We would have cheese fondue, and I also remember my mom putting sizzling oil in it and we would sizzle bits of steak! Yumm! I just thought it was the bee’s knees!!! Oh and the thought of biting into a frozen grape makes me cringe! Not the taste, just the cold! They do make for a good ice cube though, like in a cocktail! :)

26 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:57 am

Lynn, just another reason I love you. Genius with the cocktail ideas. 😀

27 Dorry October 13, 2010 at 7:40 am

There’s a fondue place in Dallas we used to always go to in middle school with big groups – such fun. I haven’t been in years but I think Billy would love it so I want to take him sometime soon. :) Frozen grapes make my sensitive teeth hurt. :( But I love regular grapes!

28 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:56 am

it’s SO easy. :) I know you’re not a cheese / dairy fan… in my best Outsiders movie voice (soda?) do it for Billy ! 😉

29 Dorry October 13, 2010 at 7:41 am

p.s. I love the dessert at fondue places – bring on the melty chocolate. :)

30 LiveForTheRun October 13, 2010 at 8:06 am

Cheese or chocolate fondue, sign me up!

31 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:55 am

INDEED. I play for both teams also.

32 eatmovewrite October 13, 2010 at 8:42 am

Cheese, but only barely. That grape was huge! Like a plum.

33 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:53 am

I couldn’t believe – I’ve never seen grapes that big – yes, I think I’ve had smaller plums! :)

34 Aimee October 13, 2010 at 9:11 am

Yummy! I have only really enjoyed chocolate fondue, but then I haven’t really made proper fondue (with wine) before. Will have to pull out the old fondue pot and give this a go.

35 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:52 am

this was my first time making it !! so easy and so YUM !

36 Candice @ ChiaSeedMe October 13, 2010 at 9:32 am

I love frozen grapes! Thanks for the reminder – it’s been way too long since I’ve had them:)

Your fondue looks delicious!

37 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 10:51 am

yes – I love frozen grapes. even this time of year, where as I type I am wearing a hoodie and slippers, and I’m STILL cold ! :)

38 Heather October 13, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Cheese vs. Chocolate would be a TOUGH ONE.

I would probably say chocolate but my favorite cheese dipper is apple. I would never have thought to try grapes.

Your fondue looks amazing – I should make it one day!

39 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 2:05 pm

for something so delicious, it really is so easy! :)

40 Liz @ LBBakes October 13, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Oh my gosh, that grape is GIANT! I can imagine the combo being tasty, given wine/cheese is such a divine combo :)

41 spabettie October 13, 2010 at 4:26 pm

huge, right?? crazy. there was a whole bunch of them!

42 Pretty. Good. Food. October 14, 2010 at 2:43 pm

43 spabettie October 14, 2010 at 4:01 pm
